Office Lighting and Eye Strain: Fixing Glare at Your Desk

Glare does not dry your eyes. It makes you squint and hold the squint for hours, and that is its own cost by five o'clock, while the drying comes from the screen, half blinks and dry moving air.

Patients describe this one to me the same way every time. Their eyes are fine at home in the evening, then burn and blur by eleven at the desk, under lights nobody has thought about since the building opened. They blame the screen. More often it is the room.

Does office lighting actually dry your eyes out?

The front of your eye is covered by the tear film, a thin moist layer that each blink renews. A complete blink wipes a fresh layer across the surface and presses a little oil out of the glands in the lid rim to slow it evaporating, as our article on what one blink actually does explains. Between blinks the film thins.

Now put a light in your view that you have to work against. You narrow your eyes under it, usually before you notice, and hold the muscles around them tight for hours. That is what leaves eyes sore by five o'clock, along with the hours they hold focus at one close distance. The whole cluster gets one name, digital eye strain.

The dryness is a different story. We blink about fifteen times a minute in ordinary life and only five to seven at a computer. How completely you blink counts as much as how often: a half blink leaves a strip of the surface uncovered, and that strip is where the burning starts.

So the light is not what dries your eyes out. The screen does that, with help from the dry moving air at your desk. Glare makes you squint and wears you down, which is reason enough to fix it.

Two kinds of glare, and only one of them is obvious

Direct glare is the light you look at: a bare bulb, a ceiling panel high in your view, a bright window past the monitor. It is unpleasant to look at, so you find it fast.

Reflected glare is the one people live with for years, because a monitor is also a mirror. Windows, ceiling fixtures, a pale wall, a glossy desk, even a light shirt land on the glass as a faint bright wash over your work. Some of it you notice. The rest only flattens the contrast, so what you register is muddier text, and you lean in.

The five minute desk check

Sit in your normal position at your normal time of day, switch the monitor off, and look at the black glass for ten seconds.

What you see there does not leave when the screen comes back on. Usually it is one ceiling panel, one window, or your own lit face, and once you know, the fix chooses itself: tilt the screen, swivel the desk, or slide your seat.

Then cup a hand above your eyebrows like a visor. If the page feels easier, something above your line of sight is part of it. The visor shades the ceiling and the top of the window at once, so close the blind, switch the light off, and see which one mattered. Run the check again at three.

Where should your monitor sit relative to the window?

Sideways to it. Workplace guidance puts the face of the display at right angles to windows and light sources, which keeps the daylight in the room without letting it land on the screen.

Facing the window is tempting, because the view is lovely. A daylit window is far brighter than any monitor, so the screen loses that comparison and you push the brightness up and squint anyway. A window behind you is the other trap: it lands on the glass on top of your work, and brightness competes with it rather than clearing it.

Perpendicular puts the daylight on your desk instead of in your eyes. That is the best of the three rather than a cure, since a bright window still sits in your side vision, so keep a blind you can close. Blinds fail when people treat them as open or shut instead of tilting the slats down to cut the direct sun.

How bright should the room be next to your screen?

You do not need an instrument. The lux figures on lighting pages are written for whoever specifies the building, not for you at your desk.

The screen side of this is its own subject, and I have written separately about brightness, dark mode and text size. The room should never be so dim that the monitor is the only lit thing in view.

Working in a dark room will not damage your eyes, a fear that comes up constantly. What it does cause is fatigue, because a screen glowing much brighter than the room makes your eyes work harder all evening.

That is the argument for a soft light behind the monitor. It lifts the surround, and turning the screen down does the same job from the other side.

Warm light or cool light?

The color of the bulb matters less than people expect. Cooler light suits the daytime and warmer light the evening, so choose by comfort. Color is not what dries your eyes. That comes from blinking less and from air crossing the surface, under warm and cool light alike.

What helps more is being able to aim and dim the light you have. A soft general light plus a lamp on your papers, never on your screen, leaves no bright panel anywhere in your view. A second lamp earns its place only if it does not glare back.

What can you do about office lighting you are not allowed to change?

Most readers do not own their room: the panels are fixed, the desk is where it is, the window belongs to a colleague who likes it open. Here is what you can do without permission, cheapest first.

  • Tilt or swivel the screen a few degrees, or move your chair half a meter. The glass reflects like a mirror, so a small change of angle carries the reflection a long way. Five seconds, free.
  • Wipe the screen with a dry cloth. Dust does not replace a reflection, it settles on top of one and adds a haze that pulls contrast out of the panel.
  • Angle the blind slat by slat rather than leaving it open or shut, tilting the slats down until the sun stops reaching your desk.
  • Take shiny things off the desk. A gloss mat, a laminated sheet or a chrome bottle catches a ceiling fixture and throws it back at your face.
  • Point the task lamp at your papers, never at the screen. Keep it low and to one side, shade below eye level.
  • Report the fixture above you, not the ceiling. Tubes on old ballasts pulse too fast to see, and people under them get more eyestrain and headaches than people under high frequency gear. A new LED panel is not automatically steadier, so name the one that bothers you.

If you wear glasses

An untreated lens reflects something like eight to ten percent of the light hitting it, which is why the panel above your desk shows up inside your lenses. Patients often tell me they see it all day and assumed nothing could be done. Tilting the frames, moving out from under a fixture, or an anti-reflective coating all help, and the coating is worth having for the reflections alone.

Do anti-glare filters and light bars actually help?

They help with what they change, which is not always what hurts.

  • Matte screen filters genuinely cut reflections, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology lists one as a reasonable step. People do blink a little more with the reflections gone, but the picture is what you are buying.
  • Monitor light bars and bias lights soften the jump between screen and surround, which is real and pleasant. Nobody has ever counted blinks under one, so buy it for the comfort and expect nothing more.
  • Blue light filtering glasses are the one to skip. They have been through proper trials for eye strain, and the trials came back empty.
  • Slow, complete blinks and far looks reach the tear film itself. The blink renews it, the far look rests the focusing muscles, and the 20-20-20 habit belongs alongside every lighting fix.

How long should it take to feel better?

Fast, for the part glare was causing. Take the source away, rest your eyes a few minutes, and the soreness usually lifts the same day.

Dryness is slower. If you moved the monitor on Monday and Thursday afternoon still burns, that does not clear the lighting: a surface unsettled for months does not settle in three days, so give the change a few weeks.

Discomfort that does not settle once the room is sorted, or that comes with redness, real pain or blurred vision, deserves a proper look from an eye care professional. Persistent dryness responds best once someone has looked at your tear film and lid margins.

Common questions

Does office lighting cause eye strain?

It belongs on the list of causes rather than at the top of it, and it works indirectly. Glare from overhead panels, windows and reflections makes you narrow your eyes and hold them narrowed for hours, and a reflection sitting on the glass leaves your text paler than it should be. That is what you feel as sore, tired eyes by the afternoon. The dryness that comes with it is mostly the screen work itself: blinking falls from about fifteen times a minute to five to seven at a computer, and many of those blinks never fully close.

What is the best lighting for working at a computer?

Soft light spread around the room beats one bright lamp in a dim office. A general light that lifts the whole room, plus a lamp aimed at your papers with the shade below eye level, gives you a lit desk with nothing glaring in your view. Warm or cool is a comfort preference rather than an eye health question. Two things count for more than color: no light source, and no reflection of one, sharing the view with your screen, and a screen that is not the brightest thing in the room.

Should my monitor face a window or sit sideways to it?

Sideways. With the screen facing a window it has to compete with the brightest thing in the room, so you turn the brightness up and squint past it anyway. With the window behind you, it reflects off the glass and sits on top of your work. At right angles the daylight reaches your desk without shining at you or bouncing back off the display, which is the best of the three positions rather than a cure, so keep a blind you can close for the brightest hours.

Is it bad to work on a computer in a dark room?

It will not damage your eyes, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology says so plainly. What it does cause is fatigue, because a screen glowing much brighter than the room around it makes your eyes work harder to see. A soft light behind or beside the monitor lifts the surround and narrows that gap, and turning your screen brightness down does the same thing from the other side.

The dryness itself eases when you blink fully, take real breaks and keep moving air off your face, and a humidifier or artificial tears work on the tear film in a way nothing on the desk does.
